There are several ways to prepare or make yourself ready to lead people in worship. In this article I will be focusing on the place of spiritual preparedness towards leading worship.
Worship is when you forget who you are, or who you think you are or who people think you are but rather engrossed by who God is.
Knowing God is a function of how close you are to Him. The more intimate you are to Him, the more He reveals himself to you. Real worship takes place in the spirit. It is a form of sacrifice when nothing else matters except him who matters most-GOD. It’s not enough to do it but to do it right! hence, the place of spiritual preparedness is important towards leading worship.
There is a saying that to fail to plan is to plan to fail. Good Preparation precedes any great performance. Whether it be secular or spiritual. But how much effort should you put towards preparing to lead a worship session. It is highly important to take note that your level of preparation is needed in giving God your best as you lead the people to His presence.
Most times worship leaders get too familiar with taking lead and in essence do take the preparation aspect not too serious. The practical truth is the more you prepare towards your upcoming worship and praise session the more your heart and mind will be open to new ideas. With God every session is dynamic.
The following are steps you can take toward spiritual preparation for leading any worship session. This is regardless of the number of people in which you are to lead. So, whether toward the gathering of thousands of worshippers or small group. Your level of preparation will determine your outcome.
The first I have found very potent is praying. Prayer is a powerful tool. I can personally attest to that. What does it do? It saturates the spiritual environment ahead of time. The anointing of yesterday is not sufficient for today, that’s why we have to constantly seek God’s face in prayer.
You can’t give what you don’t have. It’s in the place of prayer you receive what you need to do exploit in worship. In the place of prayer your strength is renewed as a leader. You set the spiritual atmosphere in the secret place. Also, anytime we stand for Christ We are directly against His enemies. (The devil and his cohorts). That’s is why we need to fortify ourselves and be on the offensive.
The Bible says in Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Prayer is essential, it’s important. Never be too busy to pray!
The second important point is as well as the first. Actually when you combine these two powerful weapons, the results are nothing less than Wonders. Fasting or Waiting on the Lord is denying oneself of food or certain enjoyment temporarily for spiritual cause or purpose. When you fast towards a scheduled worship session it shows that you are serious with the assignment in your hands.
Fasting is quite not an easy task. It doesn’t matter how long or how frequent you fast, the body is never used to it or get excited about going hungry for whatever reason.
But it is in waiting we found God. Isaiah 40: 30 says Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: KJV (Even the skillful shall faint and be weary) my interpretation.
31- But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. Hallelujah!
3. Study the word
The third point is to study the word of God- Psalm 119:47 says for I find my delight in your commandments, which I love. 48- I will lift up my hands toward your commandments, which I love, and I will meditate on your statutes.
God is ever willing to speak to us and one way you can never miss His point is through his word. God speaks from the scripture when you prayerfully meditate on His word -(the Bible ) John chapter 1:1 – In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and theWord was God. When you meditate you will find great treasures.
Have you ever been under a worship atmosphere and you got a word From God. How did you feel? I guess fulfilled and strengthened. So likewise, study towards the success of that worship session and you will get God talking with you.
4. Be Still
Another way to prepare is for you as a leader to worship God in silence. In complete silence. He whispers his will and you feel the warmth of His love. A great assurance that He will be with you in that assignment.
But the Lord is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him. Habakkuk 2:20. To be Silent in His presence it’s a form of worship. Not a word spoken!
Psalm 46:10 Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. Hallelujah!
5. Have faith
Leading worship or praise sometimes come with anxiety. Standing in front of a crowd, whether they are the regular congregation or you are out as an invited guest, it makes no much difference. The path of faith is to believe what God told you he will do in that allotted time of worship.
Having faith in God will bring about great worship and the presence of God will be very tangible.
Personally, I conquer my fear with knowing that what He did before , he will sure do again. His presence will be evident again and again.
There’s nothing that can be achieved in the kingdom without having faith in God. You cannot lead people into His presence without believing in what He’s capable of doing among His people.
Psalm 77:13 Thy way, O God, is in the sanctuary: who is so great a God as our God? Verse 14 says Thou art the God that doest wonders: thou hast declared thy strength among the people. (KJV)
Scheduled vs impromptu
In conclusion, preparedness towards scheduled ministration will help build you up. Whether has a guest artiste or in house worship leader with a scheduled roaster, spiritual readiness is utmost important. And it’s rather easier for any serious leader to prepare towards such moments.
But there are times that leading worship or leading praise may come as an impromptu, the beautiful aspect is that as you consistently and constantly prepare for your scheduled ministrations your mind and spirit will be prepared for moments of impromptu ministrations.
Therefore, any time or whenever you have a slot for worship, prepare well. When the impromptu comes up you will as well be prepared.
